I agree that jewelry shoppers these days have a lot of options and especially online shopping sites. But there is something that one has to be careful about while buying jewelry and especially a premium product like diamond jewelry. And that is to see that their diamond jewlery is certified.

Two identical looking stones are most often than not very different in quality and value. It is, therefore, important to ensure that what you purchase is a genuine product. To mark this assurance diamonds are given certification by gemological laboratories.

A Diamond Grading Certificate gives a detailed analysis of the diamond. The report includes the 4C’s – cut, color, clarity and carat, shape, dimensions of the diamond and measurements, tables and depth percentages, polish and symmetry inherent and other details.
Some of the world’s renowned gemological laboratories are:

1.GIA (Gemological Institute of America): GIA founded the international Diamond Grading System. Its strict, consistent and unbiased grading of diamonds has made GIA the most respected and trusted system of grading. It gives 2 different certificates – GIA Diamond Dossier and GIA Diamond Grading Report. The former grades diamonds with weight less than 1 carat while the later grades the 1 carat upward diamonds.
In January 2006, GIA announced the introduction of a new certificate, Diamond Cut Grading System, for brilliant cut round diamonds.

2.IGI (International Gemological Institute): IGI is one of the foremost diamond laboratories providing accurate description of the diamond. The report issued by IGI is straight forward and simple to understand. The report has three distinct areas:
•Diamond Report: Gives details of the diamond like the 4 C’s, measurements etc.
•Identification Report: Comprises of enlarged photograph of the diamond depicting the details mentioned in the Diamond Report.
•Information Appraisal Report: estimates the replacement value of the diamond.

3.EGL (European Gemological Laboratory): EGL is the defining group in setting the standard and criteria of diamond grading. Their Diamond Certification and Diamond Consultation give a detailed analysis of the diamond and the certification is recognized world-wide.

4.AGS (American Gem Society): The grading report of AGS is called DQD (Diamond Quality Document). It offers an analytical description of the cut grade of round, brilliant cut diamonds. The ratings given on a scale of 1 to 10 takes into consideration cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

Potential buyers should look for certification while purchasing diamonds. Certification not just assures the genuineness of the diamond but also enables you to get a fair deal incase you decide to resell your gem. It is also a prerequisite for insuring your diamonds.
