Mad Men fashion

I love vintage fashion, and I love good television, and so of course one of my favorite TV shows is AMC's Mad Men. I could rave on and on about it, but what I really want to discuss is the fabulous lingerie fashions that are featured on the women in the show!

Joan (the sexy office manager who knows how to work her figure) wears the most fabulous of curve-hugging dresses to the office, and her shape is truly impressive. Clearly the woman relies a lot on shapewear and girdles to create her stunning silhouette, and she has a collection of pretty awesome slips that always seem to match her outfit. This is the one pic I could find:



but it is worth watching the show just to see her rock a bullet bra! There was a nice scene last episode that showed her undressing at the end of the day with huge red welts in her shoulders from her bra. It was a metaphor for the burden of femininity in a much more sexist time, and it also showed how much structural engineering went into all those layers.

Betty, the perfect housewife who is unraveling at the seams, also wears the most restrictive shapewear to maintain her perfect Grace Kelly look.



She wears the most frilly peignor sets around the house, and some of them are really gorgeous. But I really like the scene from last season where she goes a little berserk and shoots the rude neighbor's pet doves while wearing a white lacy nightie:



And this scene, where she seduces her husband in a classic black corset, which she wears under a chaste white dress:



There is also the episode where she models her new bikini, which was apparently so scandalous that her jealous husband forbids her to wear it outside the house:



Speaking of Betty's husband: Don Draper, the mysterious noir hero of the show, is incredibly sexy.



Even though he has a string of affairs and is a brilliant liar, he is just too charming. I would love to include a pic of him here in his boxer shorts but sadly can't find one, so if anyone comes across one please post! Moving on...

I like the contrast of Don's wife to his constant stream of mistresses who are her complete opposite (brunette, independent-minded, defiant). Midge, his artist lover from season one, was a bohemian type who always walked around in men's shirts...and nothing else...



And one of her friends lounged around in nothing but her underwear at a random bohemian gathering where they all got high and listened to Miles:

I would be remiss if I didn't include a pic of the ad boys taking a client out to the strip club. It is really surprisingly nice to see a stripper objectified who actually has a realistically curvy body, instead of a stick with implants (sorry, editorializing)...but I also really like her burlesque costume from a time before burlesque was considered charmingly retro:



Sex toys even make a brief appearance in the show...Peggy is the earnest secretary who struggles to work her way up to a copywriter in the male-dominated office, and there is one great episode where she has to test a product called the "Relaxicisor": supposedly a weight-loss belt, but it turns out to be vibrating panties!

I know that first post was suuuper long, but I found more pics to discuss (yes, I'm an obsessive fan girl!)

I can't not include pics of men in their underwear. It's kind of gratuitous, but this is Don Draper (actor Jon Hamm) getting dressed, and he's quite dashing, to say the least:



And I loved seeing Don's colleague Roger Sterling in sock garters!

Finally, this ad campaign that Don designed for Playtex, which asked "Are you a Jackie or a Marilyn?" It features the same actress wearing the same bra, but it comes in black and white...and the whole episode is about opposing roles that women are expected to fill.



I like that shapewear is making a comeback! If you look at the stuff that Made by Niki just came out with, for instance, the girdle is exactly the same style. The bras are a bit more rounded, but the idea is the same.

I have to confess I've never seen the show, which I realize is practically a sin because all of my friends rave about it! Thankfully I've avoided hearing too many important plot points, because I do intend to start watching it soon, going through from the very first episode (reason #825 I love the Internet!). And you just gave me a very good reason to start today - I'm having quite the lazy Sunday and was wondering what I should do with all my time!

I agree that it's great shapewear is coming back in fashion. Even outside of the obvious benefits of things that will suck you in and shape you, I just feel like an old-fashioned movie star when I sit at my vanity putting makeup on in a pantygirdle or something

I have a couple real vintage bullet bras, but I've been to shy to ever wear them out of the house - because wow, those things are pointy. It's quite obvious that I look like I'm wearing a costume or something. I am thinking of wearing one with my 50s housewife halloween costume, though. I'm obviously just wearing that costume so I can dress up in fun retro clothes

I find episodes on sidereel.com, but I'll be the first to admit that they're not the best quality ever. But I can't find very good quality anywhere online for free, though, so I just deal with it
