I buy my wife a lot of lingerie, but most of it is from Victoria's Secret. I see some nice pieces online that are 100's of dollars. Are these really worth the difference? Is a $200 teddy better than 3 $60 baby dolls from VS? Please go into details about why the more expensive lingerie is worth the money.

There can be various reason as to why some items are more expensive.

Firstly it could be the materials used, for example slip fom VS may be made of satin, whcihc stil feels lovely, but is less expensive than a slip that is made from silk. That also gos for thing used such as threads and trims.

Another thing that may factor in is how available the brand is. VS is widely known, and may have a larger volume of sales, therefore the mount they manufacture would be higher. And a basic way to look at it is the more you produce the cheaper you can produce it for, as you can buy materials in bulk, negotiate contracts with overseas factories etc..
Whereas a company only making smaller volumes may have higher costs as they cannot mass produce to the level of high street or large companies.

In some cases with more expenisve items you are paying for quality, but as VS is not a cheap brand I have no doubt about the quality of their items. This more applies to when you buy cheap underwear it may not last as long as a more expensive item as the materials will be cheaper, the costs of production also low therefore the stitching may not be as good a more expensive item which can lead to threads coming loose etc.

Handmade items are expensive mainly due to the time that goes into making items, also as said before fabrcs cannot be bought in bulk therefore costs go up. Also brands whihc are handmade usually pay themselves at least a minimum wage by the hour, whihc compared to the wages of overseas factories can grealty increase price.

Hope this helps

Thank you for the responses. About the lingerie lasting for a long time- I buy my wife so many items that are special- not every night wear- that she only wears an item 1-2 times a year at most. On the other hand, I have purchased a few things online that were not only inexpensive but cheap. Cheap material, cheap production, etc.

What I was/ am wondering and believe I got the answer is this: does more expensive lingerie have the nice touches that make it worth the price. Little details that just don't come on machine made lingerie. I want to be able to look at a $200 corset without knowing the price and think "yeah, this is expensive because it is so nice."

This is just my opinion: while there are definitely exceptions, I think in general more expensive lingerie often does last longer, look better, fits better, etc. You can get a black lace garter belt just about anywhere but you'll notice a real difference between the $20 ones and the $75 ones. The $20 one might itch or slide around or let go of your stockings while you're walking. IMO there is a "cap" though. A lot of times, after you reach a level of "good quality" the higher prices are often more associated with the style/design. For example, a $100 bra is usually going to be waaay better than a $20 bra. I think you get what you pay for up to about $100-$150. After that, you can find bras that are ten times as expensive or more, but at that point you're paying less for the quality construction and more for the beauty of the piece. A $500 bra may be well worth it to you if you love the style and feel gorgeous in it. But that extra money you're paying is because you love the design of the piece. If the only reason you're buying a bra is to support your chest and you don't care how it looks, the extra money likely won't buy you enough extra quality (of construction, fit, etc) to justify the price. It might be a little better quality but probably not 5 times as good.

Does that make sense?

But about your specific question - yes, I think you will see a real different between a $200 corset and cheaper ones. Corsets especially get better with the higher price tags.

Wow, a $500 bra? Even $150? I guess I am cheap. For everyday use my wife loves the VS Ipex Body, which we stock up on when they are on clearance. Dig enough in the bins at their semi-annual clearance and you can come away with 4-5 in her size for $20 each.

Of course, I spend more on "special" bras, but I probably haven't spent more than $50 on a bra, and unfortunately she wears it for 10 minutes at the most.

Totally worth it! I am a massive lingerie fan and pretty much now only buy "expensive" lingerie like Agent Provocateur, Dollybirds, Myla etc.

The stuff fits and feels loads better. Most of the expensive stuff is made out of much nicer laces and silks where as your cheap stuff is made out of horrible tacky feeling material.

If you're buying someone a gift then getting them something nice in a gift box makes it more special.

I have to say I'm not mad on Victoria Secret - I think they're stuff is actually cheap stuff with a bigger price tag. It doesn't look or feel as expensive as it is.

You're much better off with Agent Provocateur or Dollybirds - their stuff is expensive but looks and feels expensive. Both of them gift box everything.

Enjoy

I wasn't trying to say that you needed to spend $500 (there are no $500 bras in my house) or even $100. I totally get not wanting to drop a huge wad of cash on one piece of apparel. But your question was whether the quality goes up with the price tag and I think yes, it does, up to a point. That's not to say you can't be happy with a $50 or a $20 bra but it usually isn't going to be as high quality. So it's just a matter of weighing your priorities. If you want to spend less and you're content with the quality of a $20 bra, there's nothing wrong with that IMO.

I mean, the same could be said for designer denim - I've tried on $150 jeans and have friends who swear by them and won't buy anything else, but I'm happy with my $30/$40 jeans so that's what I buy. I realize that the more expensive jeans fit, last, and wear better than what I'm wearing but I choose not to spend my money there.

Very nice analogy with the jeans and thank you for the words about more expensive lingerie. I always assumed that more expensive is nicer, but is it "that nice?" Is it worth it. Like you said, each person has to weigh priorities. While we do just fine with our finances, it is hard to spend $300 on one set of lingerie. Of course, my wife buys the "Gymboree" and "Children's Place" stores out to dress our daughters, but that's a different story.

I guess I will find out in a couple of weeks. I think I said it at the beginning- I ordered a corset and panties for my wife- Axami- that would normally cost $250 but I got it for half price. A couple of U.S. stores have it but they are out of her size, so in order to get my wife's size I had to order it from xxl-europe. I am kind of nervous- ordered it about 1 1/2 weeks ago and according to their website it still hasn't shipped. I e-mailed them a few days ago and they said they normally don't ship women's items for at least 10-14 days. That is weird. Until I have it in hand I will be anxious.

Expensive lingerie can be worth the price to a point. I have purchased some night gowns for my wife that have been on the expensive side, but I would have hard time buying her a pair of panties for $250 and a bra at the same price. I think when I was in Atlanta a few years ago I may have spent around $275 for a matching bra, panty, garterbelt set, and I also purchased her some stockings at the same time. That purchase was the exception not he rule. I think of some pieces of lingerie as pure luxury for her, and sometimes splurging is do right fun!

In my experience (personal), when I have spent a few more dollars on higher quality they have lasted much longer.

In general yes, although I have found Eastern European brands to offer good quality at a reasonable price. Ofcourse a bra costume £5 in a budget store is not going to be as good quality as a £50+ bra, but I have many bras for £25-£30 price range in my wardrobe which have lasted reasonably well. My worst buy was a Calvin Klein bra, which fell apart after only a few washes. Sad
